Back in my high school days I tried to be a dumb jock. It didn’t work at all. I did the wrestling thing for a while but I just didn’t have the balls for it. I was as strong as a bull but had no confidence whatsoever.
Apparently I was a nerd and didn’t actually know it. Everyone around me knew it. I loved to make things, electric things, wooden things, metal things, plastic things, software things….even made a game about throwing kids into a blender – about a kid that got hit by a school bus…true story.
After working menial labor as a fry cook at Burger King in Fishkill and then being a computer repair boy for a bunch of dirty Indians at AbuDhata in Poughkeepsie NY, I managed to break the dark star like gravity well that is Beacon.
I did manage to get an engineering degree form a respectable university and then work for a big company for a few years until my straight marriage fell apart because I was queer.
Apparently I’m on the fringe of a few communities – and recently two of them collided… I had feared disastrous results but it turned out pretty swell after all 🙂
The maker renaissance: Because our country is irreparably fucked people have started making shit again. People fix things too. Our generation is used to “It’ll cost so much to fix that you’d be better off throwing it out”. There’s a flourishing community of people that are hardcore into making their own clothes, electronics, foodstuffs – anything. Communal work spaces and groups of people interested in sharing knowledge are cropping up all over the place. This is kind of cool. Is it some kind of planning for the zombie apocalypse? Are people tired of being burned by plastic mass produced crap? Is the economy so broken that people can’t afford new stuff? It’s somewhat miraculous from the electronics point of view. Even as components become ever smaller, homebrew people adapt to be able to work with surface mount transistors no larger than a grain of sand, and wire them in meaningful ways. Crazy…
The BDSM community: More of the kinksters I’ve met are ham radio operators than I would have thought. Fancy that? Maybe people that are creative in general desire to be creative in the bedroom too…who’d a thunk it. I would have thought the kinksters would be from all walks of life – but they’re a total nerd herd. I love it. I’ve finally found myself.
I love making things, and having sex…and sometimes I even make things to use while having sex, like bondage furniture and vibrators that don’t need batteries or wires to power them 😉 You couldn’t imagine my surprise when those circles intersected and things didn’t blow up. It seems all the nerdy people I know are also con goers and anime fans – who also happen to like dressing in leather and hitting each other….wow..
