This week I would like to share with you some of the most important gods I believe in.
BATMAN
Batman represents humanity at its driven peak. Taking the tragedy of the awful world we came from and using it to grow, to drive us to excel. To think ahead, to plan, to prepare. To make a world where people don’t have to live through tragedies anymore.
BUGS BUNNY
The trickster with a code of ethics. Bugs Bunny never (or rarely) antagonizes — he waits until someone antagonizes HIM and then spends the next seven minutes using all his trickster god skills and complete control over reality (physical and semantic) to confound and smite his foes.
JESUS CHRIST
Jesus represents the Kingdom Of Heaven, the utopian future state of humanity where everyone is kind and just and fair and generous. At the same time, he represents all the terrible sacrifices we must put up with to make this happen, the most terrible sacrifice of all being to sacrifice ourself.
THE JOKER
The trickster with NO CODE. If Batman represents humanity emerging from tragedy, and Jesus represents giving oneself to tragedy for the greater good, the Joker represents the blind awful chaos that creates the tragedies in the first place. Necessary tragedies. Destruction as a presage to re-creation.
OPTIMUS PRIME
The wise, benevolent leader. Not one to give orders in safety miles away from the battle. Not one to use dirty tricks to win a fight. Optimus Prime is from whom I first learned that freedom is the right of all sentient beings.
I also have many other gods but these are some of the most important to me. They each represent aspects of humanity that I try to embody and they have each taught me valuable life lessons I apply every day. So there.
