I will begin, as I often do, with an apology. I am heartfully sorry that I missed out on last week’s post. Now let’s move on, shall we?
What has been bothering me lately… Well, I’ve taken up a summer class at Dutchess Community College. Human biology. I am in the second week of the 6 week course. I did not imagine that a 6-week biology course would be easy. I was wrong.
I really did not expect this class to be so easy. We are learning about pH and the scientific method and shit. That is nice to brush up on…if the class was full of out of touch students. These kids are seriously stuck in middle school level biology.
THIS IS HUMAN BIOLOGY! HUMANS! WE ARE HUMAN! I cannot believe some of the concepts my professor has to go in depth to explain just for these people to understand. This one girl has no idea how to recognize a centimeter. A bunch of kids can’t use a simple compound microscope. Some of them can’t even understand the concept of abbreviations. She was going over atomic mass units and comparing the shorthand, amu, to how pounds becomes lb. When she asked the class how to abbreviated kilograms, someone yelled out kilograms. I was shocked. I shouted out kg to save the poor professor from the class. I truly could not believe that this person thought kilogram stood for kilogram.
Who are these people? Why were they allowed to fall through the cracks of the educational system? It is horrifying. The attitude towards education people have today is outrageous. I fucking LOVE to learn. I love it! It’s one of the most amazing things I am able to experience in this life. To be able to feed off of the knowledge and struggles of others who have come before me and simultaneously as me is so thrilling.
Being aware is no doubt a burden, but it is an evolutionary tool to say the least. Ignorance is an evolution bug zapper. You can watch the people flutter towards the irresistible light. Watch them get too close out of greed and lack of intuition. Smell them burn and fall toward the hard, cold earth.
