Today, I would like to talk to you boys and girls about abortion. According to dictionary.com, an abortion can mean a number of things such as: the removal of an embryo or fetus from the uterus in order to end a pregnancy; any of various surgical methods for terminating a pregnancy, especially during the first six months; an immature and nonviable fetus. I would like to emphasize the word nonviable. This word, according to the ever-ready dictionary.com, means not capable of living, growing, and developing, as an embryo, seed, or plant. In simpler terms, an abortion is essentially the premature ending of a pregnancy to prevent carrying the child through gestation and giving birth.
Abortion can be a pill or surgery. RU 486 is the non-surgical abortion in the form of a pill. This can only be administered to women who are within seven weeks of conception or nine weeks from the first day of the last period they had. This method performs a sort of voluntary miscarriage. The surgery is usually performed within 12 weeks of conception, the first trimester. The procedure is basically the dilation of the cervix and vacuum suction of the fetus/embryo, placenta, and whatever else you stash in your uterus. Like any surgery, there are risks such as infection, damage to the area, and emotional/psychological trauma.
Doesn’t sound like a walk in the park huh? Well, I know I sure wouldn’t actively seek one. But, you know what? I wouldn’t want to be told I can’t have one because it’s murder and against God.
Murder. Let’s whip out old faithful eh? The killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law (In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder)); something extremely difficult or perilous; a group or flock of crows. Okay, we know we’re not talking about crows here. What I would like to know, is if abortion is murder, why aren’t the conspirators, patients, and doctors of this procedure being brought to trial and jailed for the remainder of their lives??? If this act is truly thought of as murder, why are you not calling the police whenever you know one is or will potentially happen? BECAUSE IT IS NOT MURDER. Murder is the killing of another human being. Fetuses are not even citizens until they are born and given citizenship to wherever.
A fetus is a parasite. I know, you’re all thinking “Shannon! How dare you?! That isn’t even correct! I just looked it up on your beloved dictionary.com and it says a parasite is an organism that lives on or in an organism of another species, known as the host, from the body of which it obtains nutrients. How can you say a fetus is a parasite!” Well, rest assured, I have thought about this. I also researched a bit 😉 The sperm is a foreign being that invades and combines with the egg(s) in a woman and forms the fetus. Ta da! Then, the fetus uses up nutrients and energy the mother would normally have all to herself, so she has to compensate for this. The fetus can cause harm and even death to the mother if complications arise. Eventually, the fetus grows as much as it can inside the woman and then exits the host body to live on its own….or continue to leech off of others the rest of its life.
Saying “It goes against God” doesn’t mean anything. First of all, if your god actually gave a shit about the lives of children, maybe he wouldn’t have KILLED EVERY FIRST BORN THAT DIDN’T HAVE LAMB’S BLOOD SMEARED IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE. Or maybe he wouldn’t kill them with cancer, AIDS, war, and MISCARRIAGES. God doesn’t seem so pro-life to me… Maybe I have it wrong. Maybe you believe in the new testament god who is all about love and peace. Oh…wait…that would mean you believe in two gods huh? Well, I guess I am right then aren’t I?
If you believe in the purpose of war, the death penalty, guns, or the like, you are not pro-life. What is the purpose of war? To fight to the death. To battle over an issue. To strike fear in others through the use of battle. What is the purpose of the death penalty? To kill someone through the legal system. What is the purpose of a gun? To kill. To inflict injury. These things seem to all have a hand dipped in the death pool don’t they? Don’t even try to shine that pile of shit if you consider yourself pro-life, at least not to me.
Standing outside of a clinic that performs abortions is not going to save those children. They will probably have a horrible life in group homes, adoption agencies, deal with irresponsible teen moms, not be taken care of due to lack of money, inevitable diseases, and much more. If you honestly believe abortion is evil and will bring about eternal damnation once you have died, then good for you. Keep it to yourself. Do I stand outside of a hospital screaming “GOD IS PRO-LIFE” “HALF THE PATIENTS ENTERING A HOSPITAL NEVER COME OUT ALIVE” “CANCER TREATMENT: WOULD IT BOTHER US MORE IF THEY USED GUNS?” “IRRESPONSIBLE MEN LOVE OPEN HEART SURGERY” No. I would sound like a fucking ignorant douche bag. You might say “But, Shannon, those aren’t the same things as abortion.” Well, fuck you. An abortion is a surgery that terminates a pregnancy. Cancer is something that is a part of us and grows uncontrollably, can be benign or deadly. Open heart surgery is an unwanted surgery, but can be necessary under circumstances.
This is America. I am not patriotic, but most people are. Pro-life people tend to claim patriotism. So, if for no other reason, believe in the land of the free and the home of the brave. It is brave to decide to get a surgery. It is the freedom to choose what we do with our bodies that matters. It is the right to have options. What happens to the women who would otherwise die of birth complications and/or lose their baby if the technology for abortions isn’t around? Two heads are better than one in pro-life eyes? I don’t know about you, but I like options.
